"Inner"

En 1968, Gilbert and George se rencontrent à la Saint-Martin's School of Art de Londres et exposent pour la première fois ensemble.
Parallèlement aux "Living Sculptures" et aux "Singing Sculptures" (sculptures vivantes et chantantes) qui les font connaître très vite sur le plan international, ils réalisent des dessins, des peintures, des performances et des travaux photographiques qu'ils désignent sous le terme générique de "sculpture".
De 1971 datent les premières oeuvres photographiques composées de plusieurs photos noir et blanc accrochées de manière éclatée sur les murs. Suivront, à partir de 1974, l'introduction de la couleur rouge (Cherry Blossom, Bloody Life, Mental, etc... ) et des oeuvres de plus grands formats avec une atmosphère de plus en plus inquiétante et oppressante, s'ouvrant progressivement à la société (chômage, exclusion, jeunesse en dérive... ), (Cunt, Communism, Angry, Queer, 1977).
Dans les oeuvres des deux dernières décennies, conçues souvent par séries, aux couleurs variées et éclatantes, l'aspect plutôt réaliste des premiers travaux cède la place à un ton plus distancié et ironique où la représentation faite d'un collage d'éléments figuratifs évoque de manière symbolique et emblématique tous les aspects d'une humanité complexe et duelle : la religion, le sexe, la violence, la peur, le désespoir, le désir de vivre et la quête d'une nouvelle individualité
L'exposition s'achevait avec une selection d'oeuvres de 1996, les Fundamental Pictures, inédites en Europe. Gilbert & George suivant avec rigueur la ligne qu'ils se sont imposée dès leurs débuts, "frapper le spectateur avant qu'il ait le temps de réfléchir".

"See"

Parallèlement à l'exposition fut présenté un ensemble d'oeuvres vidéos et de vidéos documentaires, ainsi qu'un film sur les artistes, réalisé par la télévision anglaise (LWT, 1997).

From Oct. 4th, 1997 till Jan 4th, 1998 the museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris   presented an important retrospective exhibition of the works of Gilbert & George, bringing together over 120 works of these well known British artists.

"Here and There"

Gilbert & George met at Saint-Martin's School of Art in London in 1968 and showed together for the first time.
In parallel to their "Living Sculptures" and "Singing Sculptures" which launched them onto the international scene, they continued to draw, paint, perform and realize photographs under the generic term of "sculpture".
The first works composed of several black and white photographs hung on the wall in a scattered manner date from 1971. Color is introduced in 1974 (Cherry Blossom, Bloody Life, Mental, etc... ) and larger format works evoke an ever more disquieting and oppressive atmosphere, progressively opening toward society ( unemployement, exclusion, drifting youth...) with works such as (Cunt, Communism, Angry, Queer, 1977).
The works of the last two decades are frequently conceived in series, with bright and varied color schemes. Moving away from the rather realistic aspect of their early work, they take on a more distanced and ironic tone, using collaged figurative elements to evoke, in a symbolic and emblematic manner, the complexity and duality of humanity: religion, sex, violence, fear, desperation, the will to live and the quest for a new individuality (Winter Flowers, 1982, We, 1983, Militant, 1986, A.D., 1987, Here and There, 1989, Naked et World, 1994).
The exposition finishes with a selection of works from 1996, the Fundamental Pictures, presented for the first time in Europe. Gilbert & George, rigorously following the credo they imposed on themselves from the beginning, "hit the viewer before he has time to think".

"Bloody Morning"

In parallel to the exhibition was shown an ensemble of video works and video documentaries, as well as a film on the artists realized by the English television station LWT in 1997.
