Née à Paris, élevée à New York, Niki de Saint Phalle a débuté sa carrière de peintre en 1950. Elle exposa pour la première fois cinq ans plus tard à St Gall en Suisse puis poursuivit un travail d’assemblage, de relief et de sculpture. En tant que nouveau membre au mouvement des Nouveaux Réalistes, elle présenta ses premières « shooting paintings » en 1961 à Paris qui furent ensuite exposés à Londres, New York, Stockholm, Bruxelles et Genève. Son travail fut inclus dans l’exposition Art de l’Assemblage au Musée d’Art Moderne de New York la même année. Paris born, raised in New York, Niki de Saint Phalle started her painting carrier in 1950, had her first show five years later in St Gall, Switzerland, and soon went on to do work in assemblage, relief and sculpture. As a freshly enrolled member of the New Realist Group, she showed her first « shooting paintings » in Paris in 1961 ; they were subsequently exhibited in London, New York, Stockholm, Brussels and Geneva. Her work was included in the Art of the Assemblage Show at the Moma New York the same year.

Au cours des trois dernières décennies Niki de Saint Phale s’est distinguée à travers trois groupes distinctifs d’oeuvres : Le premier est représenté par ses assemblages en relief des années soixante. Le second consiste en sculptures figuratives comme ses « nanas » sexy et grassouillettes du milieu des années soixante. Le troisième se caractérise par de grandes sculptures aux couleurs brillantes, parfois monumentales ou ayant rapport avec l’environnement comme son projet actuel en Italie, The Tarot Garden (cf le catalogue de la galerie). Niki de Saint Phallee reconnaît avoir subi des influences qui vont de l’ antiquité à la période contemporaine. De plus son art reflète des préoccupations tant spirituelles qu’ésotériques. L’exposition qui se tient actuellement à Bonn met en valeur son oeuvre et son génie (Cf. l’ouvrage Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland). Over the last three decades, Niki de Saint Phalle has made her mark with at least three distinctive groups of work. The first are her relief-assemblages of the Sixties, glutted with « found » objects and arbitrarily splattered with paint. The second are three-dimensional figurative sculptures - the plump, sexy females that she calls Nanas (French slang for « Dames »), which she has been making since the mid-Sixties. And the third are large outdoors sculptures in bright circusy colors, often monumental or environmental in scale, such as her present project in Italy, The Tarot Garden. (Cf Catalogue of JM Gallery.) Niki de Saint Phalle herself acknowledges a transcultural cornucopia of influences, including such far-ranging references as Egyptian, Indian and Mesoamerican temples ; Giotto Bosch and Rubens ; Antonio Gaudi and Henri Rousseau ; Picasso, Matisse and Klee ; Pollock and Calder. In addition, her art is informed by her preoccupations with spiritual and superstitious and / or arcane matters : astrology, symbols, demons, tarot cards, fear of the moon. The exhibition, held in Bonn at the present time, is a retrospective of all her work and reflects perfectly how brilliant she is...(Cf the book of the « Kunst und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland »).
