JAMES BROWN. L’art de James Brown ne décrit ni ne copie. Il n’est ni critique ou ironique mais cherche à transmettre une présence, à perpétuer un mystère. Il vise à la précision des choses. La peinture serait une transmutation. Selon James Brown, la musique qu’il écoute en travaillant et les livres de reproduction des oeuvres des artistes qu’il considère comme comptant actuellement représentent des éléments de cette transmutation. On ne travaille pas à l’aveuglette, sans source, choix ou décision. Savoir d’où nous venons, vers où nous allons et qui nous accompagne peut consolider le cours des choses. Ce ne sont pas seulement les peintures que nous voyons dans leur cadre mais une continuité, une respiration, une croyance, une tradition vivante. It is not a critical or ironical work but a work that tries to transmit a presence, to perputuate a mistery, a work that targets the accuracy of things. Painting would be a transmutation. For James Brown, the music which he listens to while working and the books reproducing works by an artist he considers important at the present time are units of this transmutation. People do not work blindly, without sources, choices and decisions. Knowing where we come from, where we are going to and who is coming with us can consolidate our course. It is not only paintings that we see in his frames but a continuance, a breathing, a belief, a culture, a living tradition. A part has become a deposit on the canvas like the salt which remains when water evaporates, an other part has been sublimated and reveals somewhere else, his secrets. From Jean FREMON.
